We began our business and coaching careers using standard evaluation forms. Next to each skill, we would circle scores between 1 and 10, write "excellent work" at the bottom, and pass them out to our employees and players. We soon realized that this method of evaluating individuals did not provide the feedback needed to help people grow. So in addition to circling scores, we began writing extensive comments next to those scores that would help our employees and players not only recognize the importance of the skill, but also provide valuable feedback on how to improve.
The only problem: the first evaluation took 60 minutes to finish. By the time we got to our final evaluation, 12 hours later, our comments were starting to read "great job, keep it up." There had to be a better way. There wasn't.
So for 2 years we devoted our time to creating an evaluation system that could provide the valuable feedback of an hour-long evaluation in the time it takes to quickly circle 7's on a 1 to 10 scale. Of course, we certainly could not have done this alone. We want to thank all of the industry experts that helped us create evaluation templates and comments specific to each industry.
